Description

The Opinel N°08 is the iconic French everyday carry knife, featuring a XC90 carbon steel blade that sharpens to a scalpel edge and a hand-finished walnut handle with the Virobloc twist-lock safety ring. The No. 8 is the most popular size—large enough for picnic duty, compact enough for a trouser pocket. Made in Savoie since 1890.

The Picnic Essential

Spread a cloth on the grass, uncork the Burgundy, and reach for the Opinel—its walnut handle fits the hand like a handshake. Slice a baguette, quarter a pear, split a saucisson. The carbon blade bites through crust with authority.

In France, every picnic begins with an Opinel.

Savoie Icon

Joseph Opinel fashioned the first knife in his Alpine workshop in 1890, and the No. 8 has remained virtually unchanged—a testament to design that needs no improvement.

The XC90 carbon steel blade develops a grey patina with use, a living finish that knife enthusiasts prize as the mark of a working tool.

Knife Care & Maintenance
Keep your blade performing at its best. Rinse and dry after each use to prevent corrosion. Apply a thin coat of mineral oil to the blade periodically. Sharpen with a whetstone or honing rod at a consistent angle. Store in a sheath, knife roll, or magnetic strip — never loose in a drawer. For carbon and Damascus steel, wipe after contact with acidic foods. For folding knives, clean the pivot area and apply a drop of lubricant to ensure smooth deployment.
